SUBIRA - The Short Film, was shot on a remote island off the coast of Kenya, which is predominantly Muslim. Architecturally it has been untouched for a long time. Hence, UNESCO declared it a world heritage site in 1980.
SUBIRA was shot in two parts. The first shoot was for five days in March and August 2007.
The entire cast were non-professional actors and lived on the island. Two days before the shoot, we had no cast, till the museum curator suggested some women he knew that were willing to act. Therefore there were no auditions. Rehearsals were on the set, just prior to the actual take.
